Japan’s Premier Hot Air Balloon Competition-The Saga International Balloon Fiesta

– Intense Contest at Saga City

“Saga International Balloon Fiesta”

Asia’s largest hot-air balloon event, the Saga International Balloon Fiesta (“Balloon Fiesta”), is held every year from late October to early November at Kase Riverside in Saga City.

In 2025, hot-air balloons from 20 countries and regions participated, attracting approximately 830,000 visitors.

In addition to high-level international competitions, visitors can witness the breathtaking spectacle of the “Simultaneous Takeoff,” when dozens of balloons rise gracefully into the sky all at once — a signature scene unique to the Balloon Fiesta.

The venue also features a lively food area where visitors can enjoy a wide variety of delicious local specialties from Saga.

What Is A Hot-Air Balloon?
What Are The Competition Highlights?

1.Balloon Fiesta

Hot-air balloons float based on the principle that “warm air is lighter than cold air.” A large balloon rises when heated air from a burner is filled into the balloon part of the aircraft (the envelope), and it descends when the pilot releases hot air from the top vent. While altitude can be controlled in this way, horizontal movement depends entirely on natural air currents.

These air currents are especially important in Saga. The sky above the Saga Plain features multiple layers of winds blowing in different directions and at varying speeds, which change over time. This unique wind condition is considered one of the best in Japan for hot-air balloon competitions and is one of the key reasons the Saga International Balloon Fiesta is held here.

During the Balloon Fiesta, prestigious competitions such as the Pacific Cup and the Japan National Championship take place. Events are typically held twice a day, in the morning and afternoon, depending on weather conditions.

Hot-air balloon competitions are called “Tasks.” In each task, pilots must fly toward a designated “target” and drop a small sandbag called a “marker,” aiming as close as possible to the center. The closer the marker lands on the target, the higher the score.

Because hot-air balloons rely entirely on natural wind currents, each task is determined based on the weather conditions of the day. The task is announced during a briefing held shortly before the competition. Results are announced at the venue and are also available on the official website and social media channels.

More To Enjoy Beyond The Competition!

During “Balloon Fantasia,” visitors can enjoy viewing uniquely shaped balloons, including official character balloons and those designed as cute animals and popular cartoon figures, floating gracefully in the sky. Although these balloons do not participate in competitions, visitors may enter the launch site to view them up close, weather and wind conditions permitting. As the launch site is normally closed to the public, this is a rare opportunity.

While balloon rides are not available during the Fiesta, special programs offer fun and interactive experiences. “Kid’s Day” gives children the chance to learn about hot-air balloons through hands-on activities, including touching the balloons and even stepping inside a balloon envelope. The “Balloon Classroom” allows participants to observe and experience the entire inflation process alongside pilots and crew members. Another exciting highlight is the “Key Grab Race,” in which pilots fly in from outside the venue and attempt to grab a large model key suspended from a pole at the center of the launch site.

The evening “Night Mooring” is a must-see event. Rows of hot-air balloons line the Kase Riverside and glow brilliantly in sync with live music, creating a magical nighttime atmosphere completely different from their daytime appearance. As fireworks light up the sky and all the balloons ignite simultaneously at the call of “Burners on!”, the event reaches a spectacular finale.

The “Umakamon Ichiba Market” at the venue features fresh agricultural and seafood products from Saga. Visitors can savor a wide variety of delicious local dishes while also enjoying live musical performances.

Set against the vast autumn sky above the Saga Plain — one of Japan’s finest areas for hot-air balloon competitions — the Balloon Fiesta offers countless photogenic moments along with the flavors and culture of Saga.

2.SAGA Balloon Museum

Opened in October 2016, the SAGA Balloon Museum is the first in Japan dedicated to hot-air balloons and offers an immersive experience of the Balloon Fiesta all year round. Here, visitors can learn about the history and science behind hot-air balloons and watch dynamic footage filmed by pilots during past World Championships on a spectacular 280-inch screen, bringing the excitement of flight vividly to life.

At the museum, visitors can also step into the role of a pilot with a hands-on “Hot-Air Balloon Flight Simulator” that uses an actual basket and burner. A fun quiz rally covering five areas of the museum adds another interactive way to deepen your knowledge.

The museum is closed on Mondays (or the following day if Monday falls on a national holiday) and during the New Year’s holiday period. Opening hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (last admission at 4:30 p.m.). As schedules may occasionally change, visitors are encouraged to check in advance.

Before attending a competition, the museum is the perfect place to prepare and learn more about hot-air balloons. It is also an ideal spot to deepen your appreciation after experiencing the Balloon Fiesta. Whether before or after the event, the museum offers a chance to discover the charm of hot-air balloons at any time of the year.
