GETTING TO SAGA CITY

Do want to travel by train or by bus?

There are two ways to travel from Fukuoka to Saga: Buses are cheap, Trains are punctual

There are two common ways to travel from Fukuoka city, the gateway of Kyushu to Saga city.

  1. (1) Trains from JR "Hakata Station"
  2. (2) Express buses from "Nishitetsu Tenjin Expressway Bus Terminal"

To board the train of (1) or bus of (2), you must first reach Tenjin or Hakata.

Via Fukuoka Airport

Visitors who visit Fukuoka city (Fukuoka airport) by air can use the express bus from Fukuoka Airport to Saga city. There are 1 or 2 trips every hour and the one-way ticket costs 1,230 yen. You must get off at the "Saga Station Bus Center".

Another option is to get on the subway at "Fukuoka airport” and get off at "Hakata" or "Tenjin" stations and then board the train or express bus to reach Saga city.

Via "Hakata Port International Terminal" or "Chuo Futo Cruise Center"

Most ships from outside Japan arrive at the "Hakata Port International Terminal" or "Chuo Futo Cruise Center".

From here you can head to the Tenjin or Hakata station by bus, since bus services from the Cruise Center is limited, walk to the International Terminal that has more frequent bus services. Distance between the two facilities is approximately 10 minutes on foot.

Tourists traveling by the express bus should head to Tenjin, and those traveling by train should go to Hakata. 2 to 3 buses depart to both destinations every hour. The bus stop has signboards in English, Korean, and Chinese.

Note the following. Please carry enough change as the bus fare will be adjusted when you get off at your destination. 1 yen and 5-yen coins cannot be used. Only 1000-yen notes can be changed to coins.

Board the bus bound for Hakata and get off at "Hakata Ekimae" bus stop. The fare is 230 yen. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes. When you get off the bus stop, the building of JR Hakata Station will be right in front of you.

Travel by trains

Enter the building and first buy the tickets. You can purchase the tickets at the vending machine or "Green counter". Since you will travel by the limited express train, two tickets are required, passenger and limited express tickets (can also be purchased as a single ticket). The fare is 1,930-yen, 1,110 yen for passenger ticket and 820 yen for express tickets. Travel time is approximately 40 to 45 minutes.

JR Kyushu Rail Pass | JR KYUSHU RAILWAY

1 to 5 trains depart every hour. Limited express trains are named "Kamome" and "Midori". Board the train bound for "Saga", "Nagasaki", or "Sasebo". Get off at the JR Saga station.

Travel by the express bus

Board the bus bound for Tenjin and get off at the "Tenjin Core-Mae" bus stop. The fare is 190 yen. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes. Cross the pedestrian crossing that is in front. "Nishitetsu Tenjin Express Bus Terminal" is located on the third floor of the building situated between two shopping complexes, Fukuoka Mitsukoshi and Solaria Stage. Go to the third floor on the escalator at the entrance (Lion plaza) of Fukuoka Mitsukoshi.

The name of the express bus bound for Saga is "Wakakusu". Buses depart from platform 4 at intervals of 15 to 30 minutes. The journey takes approximately 1 hour 20 minutes. The fare is 1,030 yen. You can buy tickets from the ticket counter at the terminal, vending machine, or pay by cash when getting off the bus. Do not forget to carry change. Get off the "Saga Station Bus Center".

Visitors arriving at Saga city (Kyushu Saga International Airport) directly by air must board the Airport Limousine bus from Saga Airport to the Saga Station Bus Center. The one-way fare is 600 yen, and the journey takes approximately 30 to 35 minutes.

Hakata Port International Terminal → (Bus) → Hakata Ekimae → (Walk) → JR Hakata station → (Limited express train) → JR Saga station

Express buses

Hakata Port International Terminal → (Bus) → Tenjin Core-Mae → (Walk) → Nishitetsu Tenjin Express Bus Terminal → (Express bus) → Saga Station Bus Center

Each travel mode has different features. Fares of the express buses are the cheapest. On the other hand, the arrival time of trains at Saga are relatively accurate. Choose the best way to travel to match your schedule.
